Summary of PPDP Goals:
My PPDP goal is to investigate and evaluate various types of art education curricula in terms of my elementary art classroom. My school district has no art education curriculum, but our Director of Curriculum has indicated that we will be expected to develop one soon. At the end of this program, I hope to have enough knowledge of various art education curricula to be able to serve on an art education curriculum team or strategic planning committee based upon findings acquired in this course, as well as provide a world-class arts education to my students.
Statement of Need: With the help of my mentor, I have investigated the possibility of master’s courses, observations of practicing teachers, and conferences. Most have resulted in dead-ends, but one possibility shines as the most concentrated and effective means to learn about cutting edge theory and practice in a post-modern world – attendance at the National Arts Education Association conference in Minneapolis, MN, which runs from 4/16/09 to 4/21/09.
The benefits in attendance are numerous. I would be able to participate with educators from around the country in workshops and hear presentations on the exact knowledge that I have sought in my PPDP; namely the course and scope of Visual Culture, and its impact on an elementary art classroom. Nationally known authors and researchers will be in attendance, and my mentor has strongly suggested that I make every effort to go. Finally, I want the Laurel Highlands Visual Arts curriculum to be effective in producing 21st Century thinking and creativity to best serve my students. I
